Eurostar and Thalys merged to operate Eurostar as one single international rail network connecting France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK on high-speed direct and indirect routes. Eurostar’s current fleet of 51 train sets can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, and in 2024 transported 19.5 million passengers.

Eurostar engaged Xentrans in 2025 to assist the operator with the procurement of a next-generation on-board communications system that will deliver Wi-Fi service to passengers aboard the Eurostar fleet. One of the greatest challenges for passenger Wi-Fi is maintaining a consistently good user experience to 16 passenger vehicles as a high-speed train passes through multiple countries. This is coupled with the fact that Eurostar trains to the UK also have to pass through the Channel Tunnel, which presents another set of technical hurdles.
By November 2025, Eurostar was conducting a limited Wi-Fi pilot with two vendors’ solutions, with Xentrans utilizing its Insights Analytics platform to measure the quality, reliability and performance of each solution, present a comparative analysis, and help Eurostar with its technology assessment. It is expected that Eurostar will make a decision on moving to commercial passenger Wi-Fi deployment at the conclusion of the trials.
